Flotilla 68 was started in 1993.  Auxiliarists Ted Donaher, Al Mastromarino and Art Spinner were
instrumental in developing the flotilla.  Ted Donaher was a graduate of the Merchant Marine Academy and a
veteran of the U.S. Navy.  Al Mastromarino was a member of the Merchant Marine service during World War
2 and Art Spinner was a retired veteran from the U.S. Air Force.

After training the 15 people required to start a flotilla, the Chartering (or "planking" as it's known in the U.S.
Navy and Coast Guard) was held on June 23, 1993.  Dignitaries from the Coast Guard and the Coast Guard
Auxiliary were present along with representatives from the City of Yonkers.  Vincenza Restiano, President
of the Common Council and Councilwoman Andrea Cousins (now a state senator) attended.  The
Chartering ceremony was held at the old Habishaw Athletic Club building.

The flotilla became active in boating safety for the public and taught the Coast Guard Auxiliary BS&S
course with the cooperation of the Parks Department for a number of years.  More boating enthusiasts
joined the flotilla and member training was always available.  Members became Crew Qualified and some
advanced to Coxswain.  In addition to the On The Water SAR Patrols, members were active in specialties
such as Communications, Vessel Examinations, Marine Dealer Visitations, and Aids to Navigation.

We now have over 40 members actively participating in meetings or are in the process of joining...and we
now have a new meeting place with a wonderful view of the Hudson River.
